thou,000 a year. the bush tax cut will expire at the end of this year. obama was elected with a surplus of about three million votes. he won the election. he campaigned on this issue. again, the speaker can't take yes for an answer. the president has presented to him something that would prevent us from going over the cliff. it was response to something that the speaker gave them himself but i guess with the dysfunctional republican caucus in the house, even the speaker can't tell what they are going to do because he backed off even his own proposal. the house, we hear so often, is controlled by the republicans. and we acknowledge that. i would be most happy to move forward on something that senator mcconnell said they wouldn't filibuster over here that he would support and that boehner would support if it were reasonable. but right now we haven't heard anything. i don't know and it's none of my business, i guess, although i am very curious, if the speaker and the majority leader, the republican leader over here are even talking. i mean, what's going on here? mr. president, you can't le

of these policies are insulting some large group of people. >> which is why they lost the election. >> they have a very small coalition. >> they don't even have the reign. but when you look at the polling even on the fiscal cliff stuff, president obama, rochelle, on a new poll, 54% approve of his handling of the fiscal cliff. only 26% support joan boehner. so the politics of it is not even working for them. they're purists, but they're not being practical, even politically. everyone as they don't stand for what you and i may think is the right thing. they're not even being practical about this. >> well, with taxes, it's so complicated because the republican party has basically got taxation at the heart of its ideology. so what they're almost in a position -- they've force ed ths into a corner where what they almost sl to do is let the cliff kick in so that then they can vote to go back and reinstate some tax cuts as opposed to somehow translating any kind of vote they take, you know, grover nordquist was going to stand up and say they raised taxes on the wealthy. at this point, they've got the s

. here's how mitt romney explained why he lost to president obama just days after the election. >> what the president's campaign did was focus on certain members of his base coalition, give them extraordinary financial gifts from the government, and then work very aggressively to turn them out to vote, and that strategy worked. >> that explanation got mitt romney attacked and condemned by the likes of bobby jindahl and other republicans. they're now trying a new approach. tag romney said this about his father. he wanted to be president less than anyone i knew in my entire life. he had no desire to run, says tag, who worked with his mother and to persuade his father to seek the presidency. if he could have found someone else to take his place, he would have been ecstatic to step aside. too bad he never told newt gingrich that. joining me now, msnbc's joy reed. i'm on the verge of feeling sorry for them, trying to come up with these crazy reasons about why he lost. and now they want to pretend that this guy who lived his whole life in order to run for president didn't really want to run f

they said they wanted to get rid of obama at any cost before the election, i thought it was just campaign rhetoric. but when the debt ceiling came and they said they were prepared to allow the fiscal integrity of the united states of america to go down the tube, that was a game of chicken i've never heard of in all of my years in politics. how much could they hate the man or hate his politics or be so insensitive to the poor? that they would tell the entire world that the united states is not prepared to pay its obligations. and that taught me a lesson which we're learning now. how far are they willing to go to you hurt the united states of america? and when is it not going to be party politics but what is good for our country? >> well, let's listen to senator mcconnell. more of what he has to say. because his words haven't provided much comfort to those who feel that the senate should be serious in its obligation to the american people. let's take a listen. >> as i indicated, the president called me and probably called others last night. my impression is he would like to see if we can mo
